Q4 - Who is your audience (VIDEO)

The target audience for my newscast is young people aged 11-19 in East London. I decided to focus on college students as they are the ideal audience for my newscast. My target audience are young people because they are much more familiar with technology which will frequently be used for my newscast. The use of technology will help me reach a wider audience as there are a variety of ways to connect.

By doing thorough research I have found out that within the generation of young people there are common misconceptions of them as most stories heard on the news involves teenagers committing crimes. By obtaining the views of my target audience I have learned that a lot of people focus on religion on the news because of recent events.

Whilst filming the video I had a bit of a disadvantage as I had limited resources to show the best of my ability with filming. To film I used an Android tablet which didn't have the best picture quality. Most of the video was shot indoors as the lighting outside didn't bring the focus in the picture so space was limited. However, I was more successful with editing. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit and add sound which was a successful outcome as the timing of the music and speech is in time with the video. Doing this has increased my skills and confidence in using these kind of softwares. With this experience I've learned what I can do to make it better. For example, using a better quality camera.

P15 - Script

NEWS SCRIPT

With East London housing the poorest boroughs in the nation the issue of homelessness has risen over the recent years.

More and more people are becoming homeless but now it's having a huge affect on young people.

Here's more from this report.

As told these days we are having to face the unfortunate truth of homelessness affecting teenagers and young people more than anyone else.

What some of our educated people are unaware of is the situation itself. Many do not know why this is happening in the place they call their home.

It's clear to say that people are aware of the benefit cuts which so many rely on to live, feed families and keep a roof over their head, but do the younger generation know this?

I have been out scouring the streets of East London asking the public what they think causes people to become homeless.

CUE IN:
CUE OUT:

The response seems to be similar with everyone, saying one factor causing homelessness is due to financial problems but only one person show they have more knowledge on the topic.

As the years go by, unfortunately the issue will continue to rise, especially for young people and the next generation.

One young teenager shared the story of witnessing one of their family members having to live on the streets.

CUE IN:
CUE OUT:

So it seems as though not every young person is completely clueless to the matter of the subject. However, it looks like to truly understand a serious and sensitive topic such as this, the best way would be to experience it.

P14 - Contacting charities

To obtain an interview of a representative of a homeless charity I have visited different charity websites and have contacted them asking for an interview. As most of the charities are not based in East London I have decided to hold an interview over the phone. Below are some of the charities I have contacted.

P13 - Homeless in London (VIDEO)

This documentary was made by UEL (University of East London) students in early 2014 to show the other side of London and how the minority of its population accommodates homeless people. One thing I've learnt from the video was what I think takes away the common misconception of why people become homeless. The common reason is because family or friends can no longer accommodate its resident, so as a result some people are left with no choice but to try and survive out on the streets. The statistics in the video show that the number could be worse (higher) in East London, as part of the area consists of poor boroughs. By hearing the story of one person in the video it tells me that the government is doing less to handle the issue. So as the years go it will be of no surprise that there will be an increase to all the statistics mentioned in the video.

P12 - Response from Whitechapel Mission

This is the email I've received from my last enquiry to Whitechapel Mission. As shown in the email I have the opportunity to talk to the director of the charity at the end of the month. Unfortunately the time coincides with college so I have to make the choice of either rescheduling or choose another charity.

P11 - Public view on homelessness

Many people in East London are unaware of the issue with homelessness for young people as well as others. I went out to the general public and got their views on the matter of the subject and what they think causes homelessness.

In this next audio, a teenage boy mentions a family member who temporarily became homeless

P10 - Result of the questions I've emailed

Shown below is the email I've constructed and sent to Jenny at Whitechapel Mission. This was sent on the 14th January. It's been nearly 2 weeks and I've not yet received a response. As a result this has made me gone past my deadline so I will now look into other charities in East London.

P9 - Interview questions

As I am unable to meet Jenny face to face I've emailed her the questions. Down below are the questions I've asked.

!) Has there been an increase in homelessness in young people? If yes, why?

2) What are the common causes of homelessness?

3) What are some of the ways someone can receive help if they face becoming homeless?

4) As a charity, what do you do to help those who come to you for help?

5) Is there anything being done to raise awareness of the situation? For example advertising, lecture talks in schools, fundraising etc.

6) Would you say East London is an area that is badly affected by the issue? If yes, why?

7) What is being done to prevent homelessness becoming popular? And is it working/helping?

P8 - Outcome of visit to Whitechapel Mission

On the 13th January I visited Whitechapel Mission for an arranged interview for the day to talk about homelessness in young people in East London. Unfortunately I was unable to hold the interview as the person I was expected and agreed to interview was unavailable and was told would be unavailable for the next 2 weeks.

Above is the email which I had sent to Jenny after failing to meet her on Tuesday. From that time onwards I still haven't received a response. This is problem as I will be past my deadline.

As a result of this I've decided to look into other charities that deal with the matter of the subject until i manage to get a response from Jenny. In the meantime i will be emailing her the questions i have prepared and planned to ask.
